Welcome to the fourth instalment of our Aim Higher Interview Series. This week we meet Kyle Green, Leeds based Personal Trainer, Physique Competitor, and PT Skills Student Mentor. Kyle has turned a life long passion in to a career and self employed business. We hope you enjoy reading about Kyle's story and how he is working hard in the fitness industry to #AimHigher.
Tell us about yourself; who you are, where you live, your personal training business
I qualified as a Personal Trainer in July 2017 and feel so accustomed to my business that with my love and passion, it feels like I have been doing it for years. Born and raised in Leeds with a challenging upbringing, I have learned first hand about grabbing life by the horns and making it exactly what you want it to be. From this, Kyle Green Fitness was conceived.
How did you start out in the industry?
My previous role was as a Business Development Manager for a Personal Training course provider carrying out venue sourcing and recruitment to run courses. The irony was that I was selling these courses but not a personal trainer myself. I had to make that change and get qualified as I started to realise my passion to help others improve their health and well-being.
What challenges have you faced during your career?
It’s easy to wave the certificate in the air but the challenges began once I found myself working out of the gym. You have to start from scratch where nobody knows who you are or what you specialise in. Marketing yourself consistently is the key to getting your business recognised whether that is through your personality or advertising digital and print-based campaigns to showcase your offers and services. It took me a month to hit the ground running but perseverance worked.
How has your personal training career changed since you started?
It has changed to the point where I am comfortable working with a healthy number of clients so that I can do it full-time. My main target was to get to this point within six months and now I have further objectives to reach.
What do you enjoy about the industry?
I love it all. From interacting with a range of members. When you love what you do, it really doesn’t feel like work and I always aim to make someone smile everyday as you never know how far that smile can go for somebody. Investing my time in someone to see them progress physically and mentally gives me the biggest boost of enjoyment for personal training.
What’s the best advice you could give to our future students?
Prepare yourself for times where your business isn’t as strong as previous times but don’t let it dishearten you. Keep focused and resilient enough to know you could be just around the corner from attracting a new client or three. Always look ahead at where your business is going compared to where you want to take it. You’re the captain of the ship so take control and steer it towards your destination.
Having come from a previous career Kyle has not only turned his passion into a career, he has applied skills from his previous work to his personal training career. Being self employed requires a level of; self discipline, resilience, motivation, and desire to build your own career. Having had a sales background Kyle has had the opportunity to learn and hone the people skills that every Sales Person or Personal Trainer who wants to be employed or self employed needs. The key message for us here from Kyle's interview is that perseverance really pays off, if, you apply yourself every day to achieving what you want for your future.
As Founder and Tutor for PT Skills, I know how hard it is to start a business and when you can get help in doing it, grab it when you can. I have people helping me along the way, everyone needs help in getting where they want to be. Kyle has provided a true reflection of just what it takes to be a successful Personal Trainer and I hope those of you reading see the honesty in his interview. If you are looking at changing your career and pursuing a future in Personal Training, please be careful of so called "gurus" out there, there are a lot of them claiming they can make you a six figure trainer in 12 weeks or less, the reality is that it take much more than this, if you do want to be highly successful, apply yourself every day and #AimHigher.
